gocco

my new gocco machine, providence RI

since the wedding i have been catching up on fun. of course getting married was fun in its own way, but a lot of weekends, weeknights, and pennies were focused on that big day. now, i am enjoying having time to catch up with other worthy adventures.

a few weekends ago i bought a gocco machine! i first heard about gocco from a graphic designer i worked with at MIT, who printed his self-promotional postcards with gocco. however, for a while it has been hard to acquire gocco in the US, because the japanese manufacturer discontinued production. finally, i ordered one from japan. it arrived and the next day i printed christmas cards from a design matt and i worked on together. it was every bit as fun as i anticipated, and we quickly planned project #2: wedding thank you cards.

lantern

lantern festival, jamaica plain MA

a couple thursdays ago i went to a japanese lantern gathering in the forest hills cemetary. the idea is that in midsummer your ancestors have a chance to visit you, and that you need to guide them back to the spirit world by setting a lantern to drift into the water. this seems like a wonderful tradition -- it gives a chance to honor death, grieving, and loss on a regular basis, not only at the time someone dies.

biking to newport

matt on the mt. hope bridge above bristol RI

this past saturday we biked with some friends all the way from providence to newport.. some 30 miles! the first half of the ride was easy, since it was on the bike path and very flat. the second part was hilly and hot, and i was the slowest rider in the group. however, matt very sweetly brought up the rear and was always right behind me, keeping me company and encouraging me during the hard parts. thank you for being my cheerleader, love.

so you see, my free time is back in force. watch out, weekend!
